His large study was a disaster. Piles of books were everywhere. Some were strewn across the floor all over the place, others laid randomly open. The place looked as though someone had ransacked the room. The room's window was wide open, moonlight gently gazing inside, the wind lightly fluttering the blinds.
Nikki paced back and forth, his nose deep in a book. Notes from his original father, the man who had created this monstrosity that was Nikolus Mamono, or rather, Nikolus Deus Anima. The title of the tome was 'Theoretical Biological Fusion: Magick, Demons, and the Nature of Reproduction and Creation, Vol. VII'. It was just one of many volumes by this man. Every time he read a volume, he would find some answers, but many more would arise. All of this had frustrated his greatly.
All of these books he had attained were simply theories, nothing solid. Had his father kept his notes elsewhere? Or were they simply in later volumes that he had yet to attain? Of course, even looking back at the volumes that he had read, he could tell that there were missing parts to them. Potential answers that he may never have. Or maybe they were just like everything else; Theories. Theories. Theories. Theories.
He was angry. His succubus side hurt Elvira. His vampire side had slain Karada. He had trouble seeing good from bad these days. It seems that defeating his darkness only brought more. Or maybe it had always been there. He was a monstrosity among monstrosities, after all. A one of a kind monster. One that couldn't die. One that was truly immortal. Even if he did die, he was never truly dead. He would be reborn again. Dues Anima. Godly Spirit. The irony made him sick.
Upon reading the last line of the book, he gently closed it, staring at it's title. It's Author, Richard L. Anima, was a genius. Nikki hated his. With a sudden burst of rage, he shot the book across the room with a black energy that was darker than night, and the book exploded against the wall. Pages fluttered everywhere. A hole gaped in his wall. He stared at his for a moment before looking for the next volume in quiet, furious rage.

Elvira laid in her own bed at home staring at the ceiling, the music of Three Days Grace blaring from her stereo. She couldn't help but check her phone again. Nothing. With a heavy sigh, she scrolled through her text message inbox. No messages from him in a week... And even then, his last messages seemed so distant. Just a bunch of one-word responses. Frustrated, she turned over and carelessly smacked the off button on the stereo.
"Maybe I should just call him..." she thought out loud to herself. Lazily, she sat up and swung her legs off of her bed, placing her feet on the cold hardwood floor. She scrolled through her contacts until Nikki's name was highlighted and clicked the "ok" button. His page came up, and she couldn't help but laugh at the goofy picture she had set as his contact ID.
"Just to see if he's okay..." Her finger hovered over the call button, but she couldn't bring herself to hit it and just snapped the phone shut instead. "He's probably busy or just... dealing with stuff..."
She thought back on a conversation they'd had once before, when Nikki had divulged to her all of the painful memories he suffered, all the people he'd lost. She sighed again, feeling responsible for making him remember such terrible things.
Without thinking, she pressed 1 and hit send, dialing her own voicemail. If she could just hear his voice, perhaps she'd feel a little better. She listened as the annoying automated lady told her that she had 2 saved messages. The only messages she actually kept - one from each of the men she cared most for. She skipped the first one, being a rather heartfelt and sweet old message from Aeron, feeling a bit guilty as she did so. The next started with the sound of two people laughing obnoxiously before she heard his all-too-familiar voice.
"Hiiiiii Elvira! It's your one and only Nikki!" More giggling and an unclear female voice could be heard in the background, before he laughed his way into his next sentence. "You're sitting here with me right now, but I figured I'd be a complete dork and leave you a message anyway, and--OH GOD!! You're hitting me with a pillow!!!" Elvira couldn't help but laugh at the memory of that day, which only made her miss him more. After another bout of giggling, the message continued. "Anyway!! I just wanted to tell you that I luuurves you dear!! Oh, and you totally just lost the game." The last thing that could be heard in the background was Elvira's own voice yelling "Oh you bitch!!" and Nikki laughing even more before clicking to end the call.
Elvira's heart swelled a little bit, before deciding that she had to do something. Just hear from him. See him. Know he was okay... She quickly typed out a text message to him and hit send before her better judgement told her not to.
"Hey love. I miss you. Can I see you tonight? I've got some pocky and video games with your name on them. <3 ~Elvie"
Immediately after sending the text, she rolled her eyes and smacked her forehead for sending something so ditzy sounding... Oh well, maybe it would at least cheer him up.

After a time, he had finally founf Vol. VIII. He opened the cover, his eyes widening on what was written on the first page.
'The Twin Experiment: Purity and Taint'
His face drained of colour. Had he finally found his answer? His rage became ten-fold. Memories flooded him. Memories fron his human childhood. Before he bacame this... Monstrosity. He stared at the words with hatred that was interrupted up by his phone ringing. Nymphetamine. Elvira's message ring.
His rage cooled in an instant. He stared at his phone on his desk.
How long has he been here? He had lost track of the time. Day light didn't affect him.He could have been lost for days and not have even noticed.
Finaly broken from his trance, he walked over to his desk, placing down his book, and picking up his phone. Sliding it open, he had noticed that a week had passed. A week? He opened Elvira's text.
"Hey love. I miss you. Can I see you tonight? I've got some pocky and video games with your name on them. <3 ~Elvie"
He stood there, staring at the text. I should text her back... But when he went to hit reply, he stopped. No. She can't be hurt by me any longer. I have to fix myself. He stared at the text for a few more minutes before sliding his phone closed and put down his phone. He picked up the book, opening is another page.
"April 24th, 1467
Ipswich, England
I have studied this for years, and I think I finally have the solution," His father's writing had begun, "Many have died, or turned into things that I dare not describe. I know I have it this time. I am so certain, that I have chosen my own children for my final conclusion..."

Elvira laid back onto her bed and waited but heard nothing in return. Every other moment, she was checking her phone, making sure the volume was turned up, that it hadn't somehow magically turned itself off. Nope. And as many times as she attempted to come up with a logical explanation as to how he could have possibly been so super busy for the past week, she couldn't help but feel like it was because of something wrong she'd said or done.
She hugged her Hello Batty plushie tightly and buried her face into its soft, cuddly fur. "Man, I need to get a grip, Batty."
A loud ring sounded from her phone and she jumped so much that she almost fell right onto the floor. She flipped open the phone in record time, only to find herself face to face with a message informing her that her cell phone bill was due in five days.
"Well, gee, thanks for that..." She rolled her eyes and snapped the phone shut, this time tossing it to the end of her bed and giving up waiting for a response she probably wouldn't get. Elvira was completely at a loss, but she wasn't about to give up yet. She jumped off of her bed with a newfound energy and began rifling through her dresser drawers, digging through tons of clothes, tossing some over her shoulder and onto the floor.
Her black cat Toby, who had been lazily sprawled out napping on her rug, yawned and watched her with heavy eyes. Had he been a little more alert, he probably would have noticed the avalanche of band t-shirts heading his way, but instead he found himself buried under a pile of black cotton. He quickly recovered, jumping out from the pile and up onto her bed where he resumed his lazy nap.
When Elvira finally had the perfect ensemble and had put the finishing touches on her black eyeliner, she let out a heavy sigh, hoping that perhaps she'd be able to make enough of an impression. Maybe she wasn't drop dead gorgeous, but she knew that she was an attractive girl. Still, that fact didn't really do much to settle her nerves.
Before she could change her mind, she threw on her slightly baggy Horde hoodie and walked out the front door, locking up her household behind her. As she walked down the sidewalk, she shoved earphones into her ears and pulled the hood of her hoodie over her head.
'Alright. It's not like you've never been to his place before,' she tried to comfort herself. 'So why are you freaking out about it now?' But she knew exactly why. She was uninvited. She was intruding. She wasn't wanted there.
The bad vibe she was getting warned her to go home, but against her better judgement, she walked on. As she was nearing Nikki's place, Elvira got the strange feeling that someone was watching her. She pulled her headphones out and tucked them into her pocket as nonchalantly as possible. She'd been known to hold her own in a fight, but something about this presence made her uneasy. Her eyes darted around, looking for the nearest place that she could duck into, and seconds later, she found herself walking into the familiar Nite Club 42.
Elvira couldn't help but snicker to herself as she took a seat at the bar. 'Well, I guess a little vodka would do my nerves some good...'

My first daughter was a failure. She became misshapen, hardly resembling her previous image. On top of that, her screams became so loud, so focused, that glass began to crack. Paladin Edwards was called upon again to put her poor, corrupt soul to rest. Her reaction was violent. Having been apparently paralyzed, her reaction was not expected. She was slain, but not at the cost of some injury to Paladin Edwards, who immediately began to have a reaction where he had been scratched. Around the wound was a dark shade of violet, where it pulsated slightly.
He had be subdued and will remain in my lab for further inspection.
Nikki stopped reading there, the hairs on the back of his neck raised slightly. He looked out his window, in the direction of the club. He shuddered, gently placing the ancient book onto his desk.
His eyes fell to his phone.
A sense of longing filled him forcing him to pick it up, sliding it open. He found Elvira's number, hesitating on it for a moment before opening up a new message.
"Hey babe, where are you?"
Another hesitation took him before he hit reply. Once again he looked out. He felt something wrong.

Elvira picked up the small glass of alcohol and examined it closely. To be honest, she completely despised the stuff, always associating the burning sensation it gave with her younger years when she didn't quite know her limit. Still, she couldn't deny her fascination with the aftereffects it had on her. The sensation wasn't nearly as exhilarating as being blood-drunk, but it was always a rush nonetheless.
She squished her face and gave it one final sour look before downing it and setting the glass back down on the bar. As soon as she felt her chest begin to burn, she made a rather unattractive face, followed by quiet sounds of displeasure. Unaware of anyone paying any particular attention to her, it took her a minute to register that someone was actually talking to her.
"Why do you knock it back if you hate it so much, girlie?" he asked, laughing at her expense, though good-naturedly. Elvira looked him over for a quick second. She was a bit weary of his rough appearance at first, but judging by his glazed eyes and the booze on his breath, she was sure he wouldn't be too hard to handle if it came down to it.
"Why else does anyone drink this vile stuff?" she asked in return, running a delicate finger around the rim of the shot glass. "After all, we all have troubles, don't we?"
"Fair enough," he responded before taking a sip of his beer. Wiping his flannel sleeve across his mouth, he turned on his stool to face in her direction. "What kind of troubles could a young, pretty thing like you have? No wait, let me guess. Boy troubles?"
"You could say that." Under normal circumstances, she would hate the patronizing tone the man was using with her, but she had to admit that it was a bit childish to be drinking by herself over a guy. Besides, she didn't feel threatened by him in the least. Surprised by his sudden laughter, she looked back over to see his head dropped down as he quickly attempted to cover his mouth with his free hand.
"Well, I'm no better than you," he responded, trying to lower his voice after his outburst. "I got into a fight with my old lady. Next thing I know, here I am."
Elvira was surprised to find a smile on her own face, glad to see that she wasn't the only one trying to find the answers to life at the bottom of a bottle.
"Well, I'm sure everything will work itself out," she comforted genuinely as she noticed a small vibration coming from inside her pocket. Her heart jumped for a split second before the bitter realist in her took over. Probably just another stupid spam text. Still, with just a tiny bit of hope, she pulled her phone out and flipped it open.
For a moment she just stared at the screen, until she realized that her mouth was hanging open. Quickly glancing around, she cleared her throat and tried to regain her composure a bit. She was almost certain that her old drinking companion was sneaking a glance her way and laughing to himself.
"Hey babe, where are you?"
As elated as she was to hear from him, she couldn't help bit feel a bit upset with him as well. He left her waiting for a week to hear from him, and this was all she got? She rolled her eyes a bit to herself and tried to let go of the bitterness before responding. Already the butterflies were going crazy in her stomach as her fingers texted back at lighting speed.
"Just stepped out for a drink. The human kind, I mean."
She snickered to herself slightly as she hit the send button. There. Nothing too personal or clingy, and nothing bitchy either. Perfectly detached, just as she meant to sound. She felt a light touch on her shoulder and looked up to see the man standing over her with his coat on and ready to leave.
"Welp, looks like it's time for me to get back. Hopefully she's cooled off by now," he added, more so to himself than to her. He shook his head a bit and refocused his attention. "Anyway, nice meeting ya. I hope everything works itself out for you."
"Thanks," Elvira responded with a smile. She was almost sad to see him go. Every time she made contact with a kind human, she was forced to remind herself why she could never really be close with any of them. It had gotten to the point where she kind of looked at them as NPCs in the game of life. "I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name."
"Jim," he answered, holding out his hand, which she grasped delicately in response.
"Jim," she confirmed. "I'm Elvie. It was nice meeting you."
And with that short introduction, he was out the door and on his way home. She turned back to the bar to pay for her drinks, only to find that the man had already paid her tab for her. Yet again, another human had walked in and out of her life, and she'd probably never see him again. All she could do was hope that he'd have a good, long life. And she did.

Absentmindedly, he tossed his phone into a random pocket, and rushed to his trench coat, whipping it onto his arms. Opening his closet, he retrieved Stella, sheathing the intricate dagger in the back of his belt. He checked to see if his twin Desert Eagles rested in their holsters, which he had worn all through the week.
His phone buzzed in his pocket. Hesitantly, he grabbed it.
"Just stepped out for a drink. The human kind, I mean."
The club. Often enough, trouble started there. However, it was rare when something big went on. The feeling he had there, he knew Elvira would need him. Their special connection allowed him to protect her, always. Or, at the very least, he could sense the potential dangers.
"Stay there." was all he said before the phone found it's way back to his pocket. He grabbed his leather gloves, which had metal studs on the knuckles, and quickly placed them on.
Nikki turned to leave his study, however, he stopped. His eyes found the tome that laid on his desk. The one volume that could help him. The one that could give him the answers that he sought after for centuries.
However, Elvira came first. He felt something wrong. He turned to leave, his steps silent and swift.

Elvira was growing tired of sitting alone at the club, and knocking back liquor had lost its appeal after about three shots. Just as she was standing up to make her way to the exit, she felt another vibration in her hoodie pocket. Without thinking, she pulled out her phone and flipped it open to find herself staring at two simple words.
"Stay there."
"Seriously?" she heard herself say out loud. A small headache was beginning to nag at her and the cacophony of sounds around her sure wasn't helping. She made her way around the crowd of people out dancing on the floor and over to a more secluded booth in the corner where the noise was at least a little quieter.
Instinctively, she pulled out her mp3 player and shoved the earphones in. Headache or no headache, blasting music was always soothing to her. The song that had been playing when she shut it off earlier resumed play right as the chorus kicked in - "Happiness" by Three Days Grace. She couldn't help but snicker at the timing on that one.
After a few moments of mindless people watching, Elvira decided to rest her head down on the table as she waited. What she was waiting for, she wasn't even sure. All she knew was that hopefully her waiting meant that Nikki would be coming. Which raised a whole new concern in her mind... Nikki would be coming. How was that going to go?
With her senses dulled and her guard down, Elvira barely noticed the strange tingly feeling that seemed to crawl up her spine. Very similar to the one she felt before she entered the club. Normally, she would have been more alert, but for the time being, she shrugged the feeling off and continued to wait, anxious for Nikki's arrival.
